UW Museum Studies

Earning the Degree

The Museology Graduate Program is designed to take two years to complete*, consisting of six quarters of academic study and research. During the first year, students carry an average of between 10 and 15 credits each quarter; during the second year, the number of credits may vary depending on research, practicum, and internship work. Students must maintain full time registration for six quarters excluding summers, except by petition to the Director of the Program.

Requirements for successful completion of the M.A. include:

  • Completion of a minimum of 59 quarter credits, including 27 course credits and 9 thesis/thesis project credits. At least 18 credits must be for course work numbered 500 or above (9 of these must be for the thesis or thesis project).
  • A minimum of three quarters of full-time residence credit must be earned.
  • Demonstration of reading competence in one foreign language, if required by the student's supervisory committee, due to the student's specialization.
  • Completion of an internship in a museum or related agency approved by the supervisory committee prior to submission of the student's thesis or thesis project.
  • Presentation of a thesis proposal by the beginning of the fourth quarter of study.
  • Presentation of a thesis seminar open to museology students, the supervisory committee, and other faculty and guests.
  • Successful completion of an oral examination following the submission of the M.A. thesis or thesis project. The exam covers both the thesis topic and the field of Museology in general.
*Degrees must be completed within six years, although most students will finish between the second and third year of residence.
